Best Things to Do in Panama City Beach

Panama City Beach runs for thirty-two miles along the Florida Panhandle, where the Gulf of Mexico stays warm from April through October and the sand is white enough to hurt your eyes on a clear day. It's a busy place in summer, but if you know where to go, you can sidestep the crowds and still get the best of it.

On the Water

The Gulf here is calm and shallow close to shore, which makes it good for families with young kids. Further out, the water gets interesting. Snorkeling and diving around the artificial reefs and shipwrecks off PCB is some of the best in Florida — the Empire Mica wreck sits in about 90 feet of water and draws divers from across the Southeast.

Jet ski rentals, parasailing, and dolphin-watching boat tours all operate along the beach. If you want something quieter, rent a kayak or paddleboard and head out early before the wind picks up.

Pier Park

Pier Park is a large open-air shopping and entertainment complex about ten minutes from the main beach strip. It has a mix of chain restaurants, local spots, a movie theater, and a Ferris wheel. It's worth an evening, especially if you're traveling with kids who need a break from the beach.

St. Andrews State Park

At the eastern end of Panama City Beach, St. Andrews State Park is one of the best in Florida. It has two miles of Gulf beach, a boat launch, snorkeling around the jetties, and a ferry to Shell Island — a barrier island with no development and some of the clearest water on the Panhandle. Go early. The park fills up fast in summer.

Fishing

The Thomas Drive Pier and the M.B. Miller County Pier are both free to walk and cheap to fish from. If you want to go offshore, charter boats run out of the Treasure Island Marina and Captain Anderson's Marina. Grouper, amberjack, and red snapper are the main targets in summer.

Where to Eat

Captain Anderson's has been on the water since 1967 and is still the most reliable seafood restaurant in town. Firefly is a good option for a nicer dinner. For something more casual, Schooners sits right on the beach and does a solid grouper sandwich. If you want breakfast, Montego Bay Seafood House opens early and does it well.

When to Go

June through August is peak season — warm water, full sun, and the biggest crowds. Spring break runs through March and April and brings a different kind of crowd. May and September are the sweet spots: the water is still warm, the prices drop, and the beach is noticeably quieter. October is underrated — good weather, low rates, and almost no one there.

Staying Here

All three Aqua Properties on Panama City Beach are beachfront, with direct Gulf access. Aqua Cozy sleeps four and is the right pick for couples or a small family. Aqua Emerald sleeps six with a full kitchen and Gulf views. Aqua Blue Penthouse is a two-bedroom top-floor unit with wider water views and a quieter feel.
